Alberto Dóniga-Lara win Quinta do Vale IG TOUR Open in Playoff

On a 3rd consecutive day of glorious sunshine and temperatures in the mid twenties, Alberto Dónigo-Lara beat Ricardo Santos in a play-off at the 2nd extra hole, holding a 25 foot birdie putt at the par3 9th hole.

Alberto shot a level par 72 crowned by a hole in one at the 214m par 3 14th hole. This fantastic shot brought him from 3 over par after 13 holes to 1 over for the round and into a tie with Ricardo.

After both player's parred the tough par 4 15th hole, Ricardo almost holed out himself at the short 16th hole taking a 1 shot head down the 17th hole. Both players hit good tee shot and proceeded to birdie the par 5 17th hole.

But drama unfolded on the 18th, as Ricardo 3 putted for a bogey 5, and Alberto's great birdie attempt just failed to drop in for the outright win, leaving both players tied at 4 under par after 54 holes.

On the 1st hole of sudden death, the par 4 18th, Ricardo fouund the green in two, with Alberto bunkered over the green. Dóniga-Lara hit an exquisite trap shot down to 6 inches, and Santos narrowly missed his 20ft birdie putt for the win.

After both players found the green with their tee shots on the 198m par 3 9th, Lara holed out first for the winning birdie.

Tied in 3rd place were Portugal's António Sobrinho and Germany's Maximilian Tschinkel on plus 4 for the event, with Henrique Paulino rounding out the Top5.

Congratulations to Alberto on his win, and all the players that participated, whose support is greatly valued, and especially their highly professional behavior and conduct during all the tournaments days.

Our thanks also to all at Quinta do Vale.

The photographer of United Photo Press Marcelo Lima won the tender of photodocumentary 2009 in UNISA - University of South Africa in  the second category of the competition "African religions".

PHOTO COMPETITION 2009 |DEPARTMENT OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES AND ARABIC

The Department of Religious Studies and Arabic decided to award a second and third prize in the Category for General Religion and a first and second prize in the Category for African Religion.

In both categories photos were invited that would focus on religious rituals, places of worship, religious festivals, religious people, religious leaders or religious symbols.

Category 1: General Religion
Photos were invited that would depict any of the above aspects in Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Christianity or New Age Movements.

The second prize (R 1 000) was awarded to Asadullah Abdul Karrim for the photo of a three years old Muslim girl reading the Quran (South Africa ). The capturing of intense reading of and concentration on the sacred text impressed the selection panel.

The third Prize (R 750) goes to Liz Grzyb for a man praying outside the separation wall (Israel). Although the quality of the photo is far from perfect, the selection panel was struck by the way the tragic conflict in Israel is captured here.

Category 2: African Religion
Photos were to depict African Religion as it has been traditionally practised, has influenced and been influenced by modernity (e.g. the use of modern media in traditional settings), has mixed with and changed Christianity and Islam on the African continent (e.g. in the African Independent Churches, or hybrid forms of Islam in West Africa), or has manifested itself in the African Diaspora (e.g. Voodoo in Haiti, or Condomble in Brazil).

The first prize (R 1 250) was awarded to "Marcelo Lima" for a photo that shows the performance of a Condomble dance (Brazil). The selection committee was particularly impressed by the dramatic depiction of a trance-like state induced by ritual dancing.

The second prize (R 1 000) goes to Jo-Ansie van Wyk for her photo of a traditional medicine man in colourful dress (Mombasa).

David Kroodsma: The HuffPost Hopenhagen Ambassador Announced

The Huffington Post along with Hopenhagen.org is thrilled to announce our pick for the Hopenhagen Ambassador: scientist, environmental educator, and worldwide bike traveler David Kroodsma. David has won a week-long trip to Copenhagen where he'll be meeting with everyone from Al Gore to the Mayor of Copenhagen, doing interviews, writing blog posts and and making videos which will appear on HuffPost Green, and representing the people of Hopenhagen -- those worldwide who are hopeful for a climate agreement -- at events and to the press.
David's passion for the environment has been demonstrated by his 21,000 mile bike trip from California through South America meeting people from all walks of life and giving climate presentations to schools and groups along the way. A climate scientist by training, David has demonstrated his ability translate science-talk into layperson-speak and has shown a strong commitment to connecting with people worldwide. Based in San Francisco, David has worked with 350.org and is working on book about his bike trip, tentatively titled, The Road to Tierra del Fuego.
David's reaction to being selected:
"The contest had many talented contestants, and I wish we could all go to Copenhagen. I'm honored and humbled to have been chosen to be the Hopenhagen Ambassador.

There are 6.8 billion people on the planet who need us to come to a meaningful agreement in Copenhagen--6.8 billion people who hope for a clean and prosperous future. As Hopenhagen ambassador and citizen journalist, I will do my best to make sure that our leaders act on our hope.
I believe that people are inherently generous, cooperative, and creative. Climate change is a problem that we created, but it is also a problem that we can solve."
